Jiwoo, also known as Spade-Slick, was on the run after pulling off another impressive heist and sending his former 'boss' to prison. His life of crime began in his teens, but it was his traumatic childhood that shaped him. Growing up with his mother after his parents' divorce, he had a normal childhood until at barely 8 years old returned home to find her hanging from the banister. This devastating loss along with the note left for him marked the start of his troubled path.
In the note, his mom expressed how cruel the world could be, warning him about men in power who take advantage of women like her. She yearned to see her son grow into adulthood, achieving dreams beyond her own. The thought of him as a remarkable young man filled her with pride, as his quiet strength and kindness shone through his actions. The note recalled a time when Jiwoo, at five, tried to sell one of his few toys to help her gather some money. Though painful to see, his innocent desire to ease her burden brought her happiness.
After that day and the following blurry years, Jiwoo became very depressed and withdrawn, turning to coping mechanisms like self-harm early on. Under the care of his broken father, who struggled with alcoholism after the divorce and his ex-wife’s death, Jiwoo lost interest in former hobbies like drawing. As a teenager, he faced bullying for his eccentric nature and his dad's reputation as an abrasive drunk. Despite having the power to retaliate, Jiwoo often let the bullying slide, believing that bad people would always be bad. By age 15, the bullying intensified. By this time it was well-known that Jiwoo’s mother had tragically taken her own life, but most had the decency not to bring it up. However, on that day a bully did just that. “No wonder your mom killed herself, no one would want a weird kid like you as their child! ” Which made Jiwoo snap, he sent said kid to the hospital with several broken bones. The situation got him expelled from school and kicked out of his father’s place and at this point he was 17 living on the streets. It bothered him none, he was smart and adaptable. He fell into the wrong crowd and learned the ways of the underground doing anything to survive on his own.

Growing up with a single mom was hard. They were all they had in each other's lives, his mom wanted no contact with her ex-husband after their messy divorce and that was just how it was for Jiwoo. He grew up pretty normally, just slightly less fortunate than the majority. He had a few outfits, a couple of pairs of shoes, and little toys. But back then, it didn’t matter about how much he had, he was just happy to have it. It was easy for him to grasp that his mom was struggling to support the two of them. He’s seen her struggle and he knew she was doing her best. He took it upon himself to try and give his toys away on the sidewalk like a mini yard sale. Something he doesn’t recall firsthand but still happened. He does remember at around 6-7 it seemed to get better for them, his mom brought home more money and was working more hours. Even though that meant he wouldn’t see her as much and would be at home to keep himself company he was happy. Subtly things started to change with his mom, he was so observant when it came to her, and over a few months, she became more timid and skittish. She didn’t want to hug or cuddle anymore, she started to shut herself in her room, and no longer spent quality time with him. Not that he was or wanted to be coddled, it was just the change from being a love bug to something opposite. He was already a self-sufficient kid, he preferred to do things himself and liked his solitude. It gave him the time to draw and write little stories. He excelled in his studies and was a naturally gifted kid, even taking up taekwondo classes as a child as an extracurricular. But on a fateful Friday afternoon just after he turned 8 he came home to a horrific sight. He saw his mom had hung herself from the second-floor banister. It was unmissable and there was no mistake. That was his mom. On the way to call the police from their house phone in the kitchen, he found the note, her letter addressed to him.
“ Jiwoo, my sweet boy. I’m so sorry, I’m sorry for what I've caused you but I tried. Men can be cruel.. horrible people. They take advantage of broken, weak women and give them promises of better and I should have known. I’m sorry my angel, that I won't be there to take care of you, to see you grow and become an even better man than you are now. I’m sorry I can’t be by your side as you accomplish your goals and move on to bigger and better things. You may not understand right now, but this isn’t your fault. You’ve always been a sweet boy, ever since you were a kid. Even then your little brilliant mind knew I was struggling and you tried to sell your toys on the sidewalk to help out. It was adorable, but it also hurt my heart that you wanted to help. I wish I could’ve given you better, my love. You will always be my strong JiJi, and I hope you can forgive me. I want you to know I am always by your side, and I will love you forever and always angel. I’m truly sorry.
— Your mom, Ann. “_
Broken and barely able to understand the words on the page, he called the police, and after that, everything was a blur—the funeral, the moving process—it was all just fuzz. He was about ten now and put under the care of his father Beom Jaewon who was quick to show Jiwoo his true colors as an abusive drunk. From then on he had it pretty rough, at home he was either verbally abused or completely neglected and at school, it wasn’t much better. He started to steal things to sell on the streets late at night to anyone who’d listen to him. He promised himself he’d stop once he had enough to get by a little while - but it became fun. Like a game, he only stole from people he knew didn’t need it, and besides he wasn’t getting caught. Half the time people didn’t even realize their things were missing —- so was it really so bad? At this point, Jiwoo at 15 had a pretty bad incident with a few of his bullies. They had lured him into an empty classroom and restrained him by his wrists to beat him up. It was pretty bad and one of the first times he actually tried to fight back. Time went by things seemed to die down at school at least, and for a while, he was back on the grind to that former kid he was. But all that progress, all that effort even if it was merely a show came crashing down. A bully had grown quite annoyed with Jiwoo and his lack of reaction to the things he said- so he ventured into territory no one else dared.
“Hey Jiwoo, y’know I’ve heard some things about you... About what happened before you moved here and i have to say... That’s some pretty tragic shit. I heard you were the one who found your slut of a mother hanging. She probably did it because she knew what a sad piece of sh—-”

The reaction Jiwoo gave certainly wasn’t the one they were expecting. Jiwoo had so much pent-up anger and sadness and the kid felt it with every blow he received. He sent the kid to the hospital that day and was also expelled. His father was very pissed and the whole situation led to a fight at home which caused Jiwoo to get kicked out. Jiwoo adapted to his new life, leaving what happened in the past. He became cynical and cunning using his natural talent for stealing to survive, he became good at it making a name for himself. Spade. He has stolen from many prominent figures in society and was even ‘hired’ for a short time by a gang to steal something pretty high value, and he did. He worked for them for a short while though he had some ulterior motives to do so - it was only when the boss asked him to be a full-fledged member did he bounce. He brought them down in the process putting the boss in prison and from then on he was being hunted. He managed to escape and has been on the run ever since. His current whereabouts are still unknown.

squid game ( player 081 )
Jiwoo always did what he wanted, what was best for him - what seemed the most fun . When he got into gambling he got addicted to it and that's what inevitably led to his downfall .He was drowning in a crippling debt and unable to pay it while being on the run . While spending the night on a park bench he met the salesman and was invited to the games .
it was frightening at first, learning what happened to eliminated players but he adapted. He wouldn't be exactly hearbroken if any of these people died anyway, they all are here for a reason. That being said, 081 wasn't exactly liked - but he wasn't disliked either. he asscociated himself with some of the more derranged and selfish players to make things more interesting for himself.
